"Green" cosmetics companies?
Where can you find cosmetics companies that are not involved in testing on animals and in some way support the environment?
To clarify what I mean by that, for example:
- The company donates a portion of their profits to environmental organizations.
- The product ingredients come from sources that don't destroy an ecosystem and are replenished.
- The packaging is recyclable and used minimally.
- The manufacturing process doesn't cause pollution or have any other detrimental effect on the environment.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Please share the companies you know of and what it is about them that makes them "green". Thanks!

It has a list of makeup companies that are ‘potentially’ working to meet green needs - Hope this helps you
And yes, that would be ideal if we could all support our local economy. :)
how cool would it be to have locally manufactured cosmetics produced from local materials. that would be the ideal huh?
These people are sustainable. Everything is made with natural oils and minerals--even their lipstick is organic.
I use Bare Minerals that uses natural elements, but I think the Spirit Beauty Lounge is even more minimal at packaging and developing their cosmetics. IN addition to helping the environment:
"As a member of 1% For the Planet, Spirit Beauty Lounge proudly donates 1% of our sales to a network of 1,458 environmental organizations worldwide. Our annual donation to Carbonfund.org supports carbon-reducing projects such as renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects."
AND they are powered by "100% Green-e certified renewable wind and hydro energy."
>thumbs up!<

They only source from manufacturers who have a no-animal-testing policy. For many years they didn't use any sun protection in their products as it was impossible to find a suitable supplier who didn't test on animals.
Lush sell a hand and body lotion called Charity Pot, the proceeds of which go to support a number of small charities around the world. These include animal welfare and humanitarian charities as well as environmental. You can write to them and nominate a charity for their consideration.
They have a strong ethical environmental policy that includes using sustainable products, locally-sourced products and oils from trees not fields.
Their organic waste is sent for compost and 90% of their packaging materials are recycled matter (they used popcorn for a time!).
Only half of Lush's products use packaging - some products they have developed specially so they can be bought without packaging, such as solid shampoo bars. These bars also save on manufacturing water use. The pots they do use are recyclable, but if you bring back 5 of them to a store you get a free product by way of thanks.
They have reduced the products they receive by air to 5%. They buy their energy from a green supplier and are aiming to make their factories and shops become more energy efficient.
One last thing - their products are divine! You can find out more about Lush here: http://www.lush.co.uk/

P.S. I don't work for Lush! But I wish I did...
