Healthy Breakfasts
They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it's also the easiest one to either skip or be wildly unhealthy, at least in the US.
Fast food places and breakfast diners abound. Everythere there are bacon, eggs, fried potatoes, and sugary coffee.
My usual habit is to skip breakfast, but I would prefer to eat something healthy now that I am getting on a new fitness regimen.
What are your favorite ways to get in a quick, healthy breakfast that won't weigh you down all day? What do you eat? How long does it take to make? Give me the details.
Thanks.
milkshakes are also another way to start the day. if you like eggs, hard-boiled with a little bit of mayo, salt, and pepper and a piece of toast [no butter].
Packed with good stuff for you and I think it lasts me until lunch time without a snack in between.
It's super easy to make too. Grab one from the freezer - zap it for 30 seconds in the microwave then put it in the toaster until desired crispness. I add butter and jam - but from your earlier idea post I know you don't like fruit. Peanut butter is good too. Or plain.
On days I don't have time for all that though. I like to grab a Kashi Granola Bar and run out the door.
Hope this helps!
You can eat instant oatmeals which come in a variety of flavors for some variety, which is quick and easy to prepare, quick to eat, filling, and ...
They say that oatmeal is good for lowering and/or maintaining a good cholesterol level, you know?
I hope this helps!
i start my day with half a cup of weight watchers yogurt... very nutritious and minimal calories
i also make a whole wheat english muffin for some carbs that i eat once i get to work. a little bit of light cream cheese is actually better for you than butter.
the carbs and fiber will hold you over until lunch.
Breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day. I worked with a Nutritionist last year and learned that it's best for you to eat both a lean protein and a carbohydrate within 1 hour of waking up each day.
Here are a few suggestions that have worked for me:
- 1-2 slices of Canadian Bacon on a piece of toasted whole wheat bread & 1 slice of Muenster cheese melted
- Scrambled egg or egg whites on a piece of toasted whole wheat bread
- Egg white omelette with turkey bacon or turkey sausage & vegetables
These recipes should take you no more than 10 minutes to make at home. If you're in a hurry though, I nice alternative is Starbuck's whole wheat wrap with scrambled egg whites, spinach & feta cheese.
Really any similar combination will work and should hold you over for a few hours until your mid-morning snack. It helps curve the cravings for sugar and other complex carbohydrates.
Coffee also helps me in the morning because it deters me from eating more. Just make sure you use low fat or non fat milk and a sugar substitute such as Splenda.
I hope this is helpful and hears to lookin good and feeling great in 2011!
Kim :-)
