I am experimenting with a WordPress blog. This is partially as a hobby and as a learning experience, since I use WordPress for work every now and again.

I want to understand the program inside and out, but I have to say that it's not the most untuitive program (or maybe it is -- I have no experience building sites whatsoever).

I have stumbled across a few intro tutorials but would really like some recommendations on which is the best. Got any?

A couple of good tutorial sites to get you going are the following:

WordPress' official tutorial site:
http://wordpress.tv/category/how-to/

Another great resource for handling some of the more basic/essential tasks (and more):
http://www.wprecipes.com/

And the last one here is a little more in depth for theme and code developers - getting waaay under the hood of WP:
http://wpengineer.com/

As you probably are aware, WordPress relies heavily on PHP (a scripting language). Having a good understanding of PHP would certainly help you understand WP "inside and out" as you mentioned.

Also hit a search engine for the words 'great' 'wordpress' 'tutorial'. That should give you a great starting point.

I don't know of any "good intro tutorials", but ...
