I am a housewife to a husband who is in Afghanistan, and I have always loved to burn candles for him to relax his mood.
I love Aroma Therapies, and its according to the mood you want to set in your home. During the morning, it is great to burn some awakening scents such as Grapefruit, Orange, Ginger.
In the evening, lavender and chamomile will soothe and create a relaxing mood for the home.
If you are feeling in the holiday spirit, then it will be great to burn Pumpkin Spice, Gingerbread, or banana nut bread scents. Its very aromatic.
Sweet Orange, Grapefruit and Lemon, I get them from different vendors. I like to burn all three scents, it gives a beautiful balanced citrus scent to the whole room.
I am a huge candle fan, and I have multiple candles lit year-round in my home. I've found some great candles at Bath and Body Works, but if you're on a budget, a great place to start is Hobby Lobby. I ran into a 50% off sale there and loaded up on some fabulous smelling candles!
My all-time fave candle scent I surprisingly purchased at Publix! It's called Vanilla Cookie and it's amazing.
You may have to try a few scents and find out what you like, but anything with Vanilla is usually good year-round and during the holidays a Cinnamon or Pumpkin is fabulous!
For Christmas, I suggest Christmas Cookie from Yankee Candle. Yum! See the pic below!
Sweet Pea--Bath and Body Works. Not too flowery, not too fruity. Just right. Comes in air fresheners and body lotion / cream. Relaxing and refreshing, what these things should do!
I like Red or Green Apple smell it leaves a fresh crisp smell to the air and does not over power or turn funky like some of the floral ones do. You can also mix it with a cinnamon or spice one this time of year for an autumn feel if you like.

Good luck!

I always prefer natural scents to the artificial candle scents, unless it's a very fancy candle...
Vanilla can come in nice diffusers and sandalwood is the most common incense out there.
